“The American of today lives in such a whirl of events and excitement that it takes the daring and fortitude of our forefathers to cope with the ever changing, overpowering problems of life which confront us. The simple facts about the loves of our ancestors, the ones who braved high seas, starvation and savages, who fought, bled and died for this country of ours, is a tale more thrilling, more interesting, than any romance.

The following is a true history of the ancestors of one American child. In it I have told the unimportant things, as well as the important, for they are what give the color and the meaning to the facts. I have written it so that this child will know what it means to be a real American, what our obligations are to these wonderful people, whose deeds are written in their blood across the pages of the history of this country; these staunch people who have set us such a high standard of honor and valor, which we must carry on.”

Generation No. 1

      1. Elizabeth² Jackson (John¹)¹ was born 1767 at Howard’s Lick, Hampshire County/ now Hardy County, (West) Virginia¹ and died after 1850 probably near Dayton, Greene County, Ohio¹. Burial: after 1850, possibly Osborn Cemetery, Fairborn, Greene County, Ohio³. She married Abraham Brake^2,3 between 1784 – 1787 in Hampshire County, Virginia³, son of Johan Jacob Brake and Maria Elizabeth Cooper. He was born August 1763 in Virginia, and died 20 August 1842 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia³. Burial: after 20 August 1842, Jackson Historical Park, Pike Street, Clarksburg, Harrison County, (West) Virginia.

It is family legend that Elizabeth went west after the death of her husband and died in 1862. However, she may have died in 1852 and maybe buried in the Osborn Cemetery near the present day Wright/Patterson Airfield, which was at one time part of George Brake’s land. On 18 September 1850, she was listed as Elizabeth Break, age 83, born in Virginia,(1767) living in Bath Township, Green County, Ohio, with George Break, age 63, and wife Jane Break, age 68. She has not been located in the 1860 census for Ohio, and George Brake was living alone at the time.

Abraham Brake was listed in the Hampshire County, (West) Virginia Tax List A, with 3 horses and 5 cattle, and was in Hardy County, (West) Virginia as late as 1792/93, where he was appointed “overseer of the road in the room of George See” on 9 April 1792 and on 10 June 1793 “Leonard Stump was appointed overseer of the road in the room of Abraham Brake.” He first appeared in Harrison County, (West) Virginia Tax Lists in 1799, the year he purchased his Brushy Fork property from his brother-in-law, George Jackson. He was on the Harrison County, land tax assessed list in 1800. (Court Records: between 1792 – 1793, Hardy County, (W)V)^8,9

In 1810 Abram Brake is listed with 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 3 males 16-26 and 1 male 45 and over; 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45 and over, and 1 slave. If these are all his children, then there would have been 13. Other children listed on various genealogy’s are: Rachel, Isaac, Courtland and Jackson. (Census: 1810, Harrison County, (W)V)^6,7

In 1820 he was a next door neighbor or Rev. and Mrs. John Davis on Brushy Fork of Elk near Quiet Dell, West Virginia. Today this would be near the intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt.79. (For home place information refer to Harrison County, Deeds: 1/183, 2/458, 3/264, 6/13, 7/148, and 12/143). Abraham was in the Hardy County, tax list of 1800 and the Harrison County, tax list of 1801. He was one of the appraisers of John Powers estate in the 1820’s. His birth date is from census and tombstone data. His death date is from his tombstone.

Among their land transactions, on 31 September 1836, Abraham and Elizabeth Brake, sold to Alexander Ireland, for 50 cents per acre, “land lying in the County, of Lewis (now Upshur) and State of Virginia, on the waters of Buckhannon river, adjoining the tract of land that said Alexander R. Ireland now lives on, to imbrace [sic] all the land that the said Abraham Brake, and Elizabeth his wife owns, on the waters of Turky [sic] run, a branch of Buckhannon, that is all from the top of the ridge between the said Turky [sic] run and Buckhannon River, with the lines of the farm that said Ireland now lives on, being a part of a tract of land that was granted by the Commonwealth, to John Jackson Senior, Supposed to contain one hundred acres.” Abraham and Elizabeth both signed with their mark.

Abraham applied for a pension for service in the Revolutionary War on 8 July 1834, at age 70 years in August 1833, stating that he lived near Moorefield, Virginia, was drafted into the service, but did not know the year. He claimed he marched under Capt. Bernian to Catfish on the Ohio River, thence to Morgantown, (West) Virginia, back to Moorefield and was dismissed. The pension was not allowed as there was insufficient proof of such service as requested by the department of Pensions. He also stated that his father resided at Buckhannon Fort, and that he visited him there, after the above service. (Rev. War Pension: 08 July 1834, Harrison County, (West)Virginia)^10,11

 

Children of Elizabeth Jackson and Abraham Brake are:

2                  i.    Sophia/Rachel³ Brake¹¹, born about 1784 in probably Hampshire County/now Hardy County, (West) Virginia^12,13.

Sophia and Rachel are names of children of Abraham and Elizabeth listed in various genealogies. There is a female in the 1810 and 1820 Harrison census in this age bracket, but not in 1830. This child is unconfirmed.

5                iv.    Sarah Brake¹³, born between 1784 – 1794 in Virginia^14,15. She married John Morris¹⁵ 20 August 1820 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia^16,17. They were married by the Rev. J. Chevront. The marriage bond was signed by William Hagle.

11                x.   William W. Brake¹⁹, born 1808 in probably Harrison County, (West) Virginia^20,21; died 30 October 1861 in Jacksonville, Lewis County, West Virginia^22,23,24. Burial: after 30 October 1861, probably Jacksonville Cemetery, Lewis County, West Virginia^28,29 He married Nancy C. Norris²⁴ 03 January 1836 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia^25,26,27; born about 1813 in Freeman’s Creek, Lewis County, (West) Virginia²⁷. Nancy was the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Norris. One source has her listed as Ann Pierson, but this is in error. She was referred to as Ann, which is a nickname for Nancy.

In 1842, William and Ann Brake relinquish land to Abraham Brake. William was living in Lewis County, (West) Virginia. (Deed M/258: 10 December 1842, Harrison County, (W)V)^30,31

In 1843, William was jailed in Frederick County, Virginia for counterfeiting. This case proves him the son of Abraham.

In 1850, William Brake was age 40, a farmer, living in Lewis County, with wife, Nancy, age 37, both born in Virginia. They are living next door to her parents, Samuel and Catherine Norris. Living next to them is Milly Norris, age 34, with children Martha, age 9, Cummings, age 3 and Virginia A., age 2. Cummings Norris is a proven descendant of John and Elizabeth and son of Cummings Jackson.

In 1860 William Brake was age 52, a hotelkeeper, living in Jacksonville, Lewis County, (West) Virginia and wife, Nancy C., was age 44. They were living next door to John G. Arnold and near Porter M. Arnold, Jackson descendants.

The village of Jacksonville, at the beginning of the Civil War, consisted of the “Arnold House”, ordinaries conducted by William Brake and Samuel B. Hogsitt, two stores and about five or six houses, and was easily the most important center in the southern end of the county.

William was murdered by William Peirson, bushwhacker, during the Civil War.

Newspaper Articles: Daily Intellengencer, Wheeling, (West) Virginia:

“Not all bushwackers were Southern, however. One of the most notorious of all was William G. Pierson, who espoused the cause of the Union very early in the war, though two of his sons honorable took sides with the South by joining its armies. Pierson lived out the Gauley Bridge turnpike about two miles south of Jacksonville. At the very beginning of the war in western Virginia, he gathered a few kindred spirits about him and formed an organization called Pierson’s Rangers. From headquarters at Hogsett’s tavern at Jacksonville they caused a reign of terror throughout Collins Settlement. Pierson was feared and hated by men of both parties. Porter M. Arnold, justice of the peace and prominent citizen of the county, asked the regular forces of the Confederates to break up his band. “If you will kill Bill Pierson,” he once is reported to have said to Captain Imboden, “I’ll give your two hundred acres of land.” “If I see Pierson,” was the reply, “I’ll kill him, and you don’t need to give me any land for it.”

Late in October, 1861, Pierson entered Jacksonville on the night and compelled Arnold, William Brake, William Francis and a man named Blair to get out of their beds and accompany him. When the party had gone about a mile up the river with the captives a short distance in front of the party the rangers opened fire without warning. At the first volley Francis fell feigning death, and Arnold, Brake and Blair were killed or mortally wounded. The rangers proceeded on their way without further ado, and Francis ran to Weston to secure medical attention and aid. The act so incensed the people of the community, both those of Union and those of Confederate sympathies, and so increased the public detestation which his previous acts had evoked that Pierson was compelled to leave the community and go into hiding. Later in the course of the war he scouted for the Federals from his home in Jane Lew. In the autumn of 1864 he was shot by an unknown hand while standing on the porch of his home.

” A PROCLAMATION”

Whereas information has been ____ before ___ that on the night of the _0th October, 1861, WM BRAKE and GEORGE BLAIR, residents of the County, of Lewis were murdered under circumstances under great ___: and WILLIAM G. PIERSON, ENOCH CUNNINGHAM, and CHRISTIAN SIMON, are charged with said offences.

Now, therefore, I Frances B. Pierpon, Governor of Virginia as authorized by law do hereby offer A REWARD OF THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS for the apprenhension and securing in jail of the said William G. Pierson, Enoch Cunningham and Christian Simon, and ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS for the arrest and delivery of any one of them.

Given under my hand and the __ seal of the Commonwealth of the City of Wheeling this 19th day of November 1861, and in the eighty-sixth year of the Commonwealth.

“ARREST OF MURDERS” – Adjutant General Samuels yesterday received a dispatch from Buckhanan,(sic) announcing that Pierson, Cunningham, and Simon, who recently murdered two citizens of Lewis county, and for whom the Governor recently offered a reward, had been arrested and confined in jail. The arrest was made by some soldiers of the Third Virginia Regiment, now stationed at Buckhanan.” (sic) (25 November 1861).

“ANOTHER AND ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY”

It will be remembered that some time ago we published an account of a double murder, in which it was stated that three secessionists, named Pierson, Simons and Cunningham, had seized and shot two Union men in Lewis county. The Governor, upon what was considered good authority, offered a reward of $300 for the arrest of the murderers, and the three men above named were accordingly arrested and lodged in jail at Buckhannon. It now turns out that Pierson, Simons and Cunningham were Union men, and belonged to the Home Guard, of which one Tomlison was captain. Tomlison ordered Pierson and the rest to go and arrest Wm. Brake and two others, and directed them, in case the prisoners should attempt to escape, to shoot them. The prisoners were accordingly seized, and whilst being taken to camp made an attempt to escape, and were fired upon whilst running. Brake and another were killed and so started the story of the diabolical murder. We understand that the neighbors of Pierson, Simons and Cunningham are getting up a petition praying that they be released.” (3 December 1861)

Buckhannon, Upshur County, Va.,

November 28, 1861

Editors Intelligencer: Having noticed in your paper an accusation of the murder of two men in the County, of Lewis, committed by W. G. Pierson, Enoch Cunningham and Christian Simon and saying we were secesh, we denounce it to the world as a base falsehood. We are Union men, and expect to live and die so. Cunningham and Simon are soldiers, and are in the service of the 9th Virginia Regiment; and I (Pierson) have been in the service of the Government as a scout and guide, ever since the 4th of July last, which can be seen by reference to Gen. Rosecrans and all his officers in command. What we have done we can show clean bands for and will do so. We have had this charge made against us by the lowest grade of secessionists, in the person of Owen F. Frances, of Weston, and others, who will be shown to the Union party at a proper time. And as for Brake, Blair and Arnold being good Union men, I take the responsibility to say that they were the worst secesh in our land, and believed by all to be connected with the shooting and robbery of our trains, and all treasonable acts.

We are now in jail on this false charge, and claim it as a right to publish this in your paper, as you have used our names in a way you have. And we also think the Government is getting very liberal, to offer $300 reward for three Union men in the neighborhood, and in the public service of this glorious old Union. gentlemen, we only appeal to our Government for protection.

“Wheeling, Dec. 4, 1861

Editors of the Intelligencer:

In your issue of Dec. 3d, I noticed a communication from Wm. G. Pierson, exhonerating himself from all blame of willful and malicious murder in the case of Brake, Arnold and others!

Now I happen to know something about this man Pierson, being born and reared in the same neighborhood and consequently have a right to know as much of his principles as any one in Lewis or Braxton counties. Mr. Pierson has always been a loyal and good citizen ever since my recollection; and since the breaking out of this war he has identified himself with the Union party, and has never been known to plight his faith to any other doctrine.

Mr. Pierson has done more for Braxton County, then say other men in it or adjoining localities. He came on with the first Federal army under Col. Tyler, and used all of his influence in behalf of the people of Braxton, Lewis, Webster and other counties.

He was one amongst the first to vindicate the Federal cause in his neighborhood, and maintained his principles surrounded on all sides by overwhelming number of enemies to their country, and in so doing he received a severe wound of which he is scarcely well yet. Under these considerations and in view of this array of facts I think the matter should be properly investigated and thoroughly sifted before proceeding to extremities or passing premature opinions derogatory to the standing and character of an estimable citizen.

If the facts in the case prove different from my views, I have nothing to say, pro or con on the subject. My previous knowledge of the gentleman in question elicits this notice.

“A Different Version Still

Eds. Intelligencer: Having noticed in your daily issues three erroneous statement about the shooting and killing of Wm. Brake, P. M. Arnold and George Blair in and near Jacksonville, Lewis County, Va., I now desire to make a short and concise statement of facts through your columns in relation to this matter. In order to set the public mind right, as I am a citizen in the same vicinity where the deed was done, and where the parties implicated reside. I maintain that it is the duty of every loyal citizen to aid in the proper manner to put down the rebellion which pervades our once happy land. But in rendering such aid, he must be sure that he is right before he acts – not pick up his musket or rifle and go out and ill or murder men indiscriminately and fear was done in case before me. And then if there happens to be more secession men killed than Union men, the public must ___ and connive at it as there is a majority of Union men in such society and that too in a neighborhood and County, where civil war is maintained…

…In all the foregoing representations which have appeared in the Daily Intelligencer, this man Pierson has been coupled with military soldiers. And the reasons of this to me are apparant.

Some persons suppose that the whole thing was set on foot by Pierson, to get personal revenge of the parties who were killed and tried to be killed. This, most likely, is true, to judge from the antecedents of all parties. I think that he ought to have a trial before a civil tribunal, either to relieve him from an unjust imputation of guilt, or else find him guilty of the blood of these men.

The first account of the affair stated that three secessionists had killed three Union men at Jacksonville, in Lewis county. This is not true. Wm Brake had voted for the Union, and talked in favor of its restoration before Union men, but his acts were rather of a secession character, so he might properly be termed a milk and water Union man. P. M. Arnold was a rampant seccessionist. Owen T. Frances, who escaped getting killed after being marched out with Brake and Arnold, was a brother in principle to the Union of Benedicts. Geor. Blair voted for secession, had taken the oath of allegiance, (as had Arnold) was a warm friend of secession, but was not known to be guilty of any overt acts of guilt in favor of secesh since or before he had taken the oath of allegiance.

Now here is the nice point. Did these men deserve being called up at the hour of midnight; and being marched away from their homes and shot down, or did they not? It is for you, Gen. Rosecrans, and your, Gov. Peirpont, to determine. The men, implicated in the deed here among us are Wm. G. Pierson (a citizen), Capt. Tomlinson (now said to be in Gen. Kelley’s command), Wm. J. Smith, Christian Simon, R. B. Curry, Enoch G. Cunningham, and rather a straggler from the Ohio 8th, who happened to be in the camp of th Home Guards at the time under command of Capt. Will Tomlins.

It is proper to mention that some of the men who did the shooting were disguised – false mostaches, etc. and that it is generally believed among the citizen here that Curry, Cunningham and Simon done no shooting and consequently no guilt or blame can be attached to them. I make _____ of this that if there is any guilt let it rest where it justly belongs.

Mr. Pierson, in his letter on the 3d inst., says that the government is getting quite liberal to off a reward of $300 for three Union men. I think that it is somewhat drawing in its ____…. For some time prior to said reward, Gen. Rosecrans gave said Pierson four horses and four wagons, all government property, valued by said Wm. G. Pierson at from six to seven hundred dollars. The only authority I have for saying that Gen. Rosecrans made the gift is Mr. Pierson himself. He and the General for it.

I will now take a passing notice of Mr. G. F. Taylor’s letter on the 6th inst. in reference and exhonoration of Mr. Pierson. He (Taylor) says that Pierson received a shot from some unprincipled Secessionist, before this happened at Jacksonville. Mr. Taylor is the first man to reveal that secret to the world – and I think will be the last one, for it is not true. Again; he says that he (Pierson) is and was a soldier in the federal army; this assertion has the same amount of truth. Again: he says that Mr. Pierson was the first to endorse the Union sediment in his neighborhood – and that too, among overwhelming numbers of secessionists. — This assertion, also, savors of the same kind of inklings. For at the Bassett Squire house election precinct we were nearly equally divided, a Union and Secession, and all the secession voters were out at the polls, while all the Union men staid at home. Then where is your overwhelming numbers in the opposite ranks. Don’t write too bright a history for any man, after this, where the vitals of good society are at stake: especially, when you know but few, if any of the facts is the premises of the case at hand. Again, you say, Mr. Pierson was a very respectable man while a citizen of Braxton county; this may all be true. – How many good men had we before secession came up. A Union man is not infallable.

Mr. Pierson’s visits with Col. Tyler to Braxton was, I apprehend, to care for his two ___in the secesson army more than just to bring the acquaintances who had turned rebels back to the old landmarks. However, I believe he rendered pretty good service for one individual in bringing rebels back to their primitive loyalty. But being the principal leader with this killings at Jacksonville and vicinity, as many believe, more than a thousand times out weighs the good he done in Braxton county. To say the least, the killing of Brake, Arnold, Blair and Heter, in the manner it was done, has brought disgrace and ruin to the Union cause here. And I think savors very much towards barbarism.

3. George Washington³ Brake (Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)³¹ was born 12 February 1788 in Hardy County, (West) Virginia^32,33, and died 18 August 1864 in Greene County, Ohio³³. Burial: after 18 August 1864, Osborn Cemetery, near Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio³⁸. He married Jane McClure³³ 09 March 1813 in Cincinnati, Ohio^34,35. She was born 1779 in Kentucky^36,37,38, and died 19 July 1855 in Greene County, Ohio³⁸. Burial: after 19 July 1855, Osborn Cemetery, near Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio⁴⁰.

Georgia Brake Todd has George’s birthdate 15 January 1789 Harrison County, (West) Virginia, however, calculated from his tombstone death age at 76y6m6d, birth would be 12 February 1788. Given that his father did not appear to be in Harrison County, much before 1799, he was probably born in Hardy County.

George signed a petition in Harrison County, (West) Virginia in 1803. By 1816, he was in Greene County, Ohio. George owned the land which is now a part of the Wright-Patterson Air Field. The Osborn (Fairfield) Cemetery, where he is buried, is on the air field located just off Broad Street at the west end of Clover street in Fairborn. This is about the location of the Abraham Brake home on the 1855 map.

He bought land ” between the Miami’s” on 1 August 1816 and again on 29 November 1826, he purchased 80.96 acres from the Cincinnati Land Office, in Hamilton County. (Property: between 1816 – 1826, Greene County, Ohio)^39,40

On 25 October 1864, Abram Brake filed a petition of partition in Clark County, Ohio for the estate of George Brake. “Heirs of George Brake sell to Abramham (sic) Brake,” Cyrus Albin, Sheriff, Commons Pleas Court, filed against Bruce M. Brake, Aldeba Brake and Dedama Lisk. On July 1, 1865, 80.95 acres was sold to Abramham (sic) Brake for $2995.52, at $37.07 per acre. On 25 February 1874, Abraham and wife sell in Greene County, to W. Shartel of Clark County, 80.95 acres, signed by A. Brake and Margaret Brake, witness, George Brake, M.V. Bagott and J. P. Bagott.

George and Jane may have had six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. In 1840, George Brak (sic) is living in Bath Twp., Greene County, Ohio, listed with three children and wife: 2 males under 10, (born 1810-1820) 1 male, 26-45, 1 female under 10, (born 1810-1820) and 1 female 26-45.

He had three sons in 1820, 1 age 5-10 (1820-1825), 1 age 10-15 (1815-1820) and 1 age 15-20(1810-1815). He was age 40-50 as was his wife. There were two daughters, 1 age 10-15 (1815-1820) and 1 age 15-20 (1810-1815). (Census: 1820, Bath Twp., Greene County, Ohio)³⁸

In 1840, he has two males, who are probably William and Abram. There are two females, 1 age 10-15, born 1825-1830, and 1 born 1810-1820.

In 1850, George Break, age 63, born in Virginia was living in Bath, Greene County, Ohio, his wife Jane was age 68. Living there also was his mother, Elizabeth Break, age 83, born in Virginia and Sophia Turner, age 18, born in Ohio. In 1860 George Brake was living in Bath Township, Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio. He was age 73, born in Virginia, a farmer, with a real estate value at $11,200 and a personal property value of $2000. Living with him was Mary Marsh, age 38, born in Virginia, Lydia Toughers, age 26, born in Ohio, Charlotte Toughers, age 5 and Henry Shearer, age 17, laborer, born in Ohio.

Jane’s birth date, calculated from death age, of 76 years would be 1779. In the 1850 census she is listed as Jane Break, age 51, being born about 1781 in Kentucky. Her father was James McClure, born July 9, 1748, the son of John and Jane (Ahll) McClure. He lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Grayson, Virginia and Limestone, Kentucky before moving to Fairfield, Ohio. His wife, Martha, was English and born 1 January 1752; died 24 March 1833, at age 81. Jane moved from Kentucky with her brother, Samuel in 1813, where she met and married George Brake.

 

Children of George Brake and Jane McClure are:

He married Jane McClure⁴² 1830 in Highland County, Ohio⁴², daughter of Thomas McClure and Elizabeth. She was born 14 July 1799 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania⁴², and died 27 November 1870 in Oxford, Benton County, Indiana⁴². She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth McClure. Burial: after 27 November 1870, West Cemetery, Oxford, Benton County, Indiana⁴⁴.

John Brake believed to be the son of Abraham and Elizabeth purchased land in Greene County, Ohio, about the same time as his brother, George. He made one purchase on 21 December 1816 and a second purchase on 3 February 1818. (Property: between 1816 – 1818, Greene County, Ohio).^43,44

John was listed in the Highland County, Ohio tax list for 1831, was in Fayette County, Ohio in 1850 and had land in Petersburg, Ohio.

On 16 June 1860, Jane Brake was head of the household, age 59, born in Pennsylvania, living in Oxford, Benton County, Ohio. Her son, John was living with her, farming and Samuel B. Taggert, 27, minister, born in Pennsylvania was with her.

In 1870 she was living in Oxford, Benton County, Indiana, age 70, born in Pennsylvania. There was one servant, Henrietta Brier, age 16, born in Indiana and a boarder, working for the railroad, Earl Sherwood, age 25, born in Pennsylvania.

6. Elizabeth³ Brake (Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)⁴⁴ was born 1798 in Virginia^45,46. She married Joshua Minor⁴⁶ 22 September 1822 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia⁴⁶. He was born 1802 in Maryland⁴⁶. They were married by the Rev. John Davis. Jesse Jarvis and John Young signed the marriage bond.

Joshua Minor was bound to John T. Young to learn the trade of clothier on 18 April 1820. He was above the age of 16. (Harrison County, Minute Book 1820-1823).

On 22 June 1860, Greene County, Ohio, City of Bellbrook, Joshua Minor is age 58, farmer, born in Maryland. His wife, Elizabeth, is age 62, born in Virginia, son Thomas is age 24/26, farmer, born in Ohio with wife, Mary, age 23, born in Ohio and daughter, Nelly, age 1, born in Ohio.

7. Edward D.³ Brake (Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)⁴⁶ was born 1800 in Virginia^47,48, and died before 1870 in probably Ross County, Ohio⁴⁸. He married Elizabeth White⁴⁸ 07 April 1825 in Highland County, Ohio⁴⁸. She was born 1805 in New Jersey⁴⁸, and died before 1860 in probably Ross County, Ohio⁴⁸.

Edward was listed in the Harrison County, (West) Virginia tax list for 1823. He was not found in the Ross County, census index in 1830. However, on 9 October 1830, he purchased land in Ross County, from George and Margaret Brown. He paid $300 for a “tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County, of Ross on the Waters of Upper Twin Creek”. The deed was witnessed by John Brake and Nathan Hays. He was on the Ross County, Ohio property tax list in 1835, in the 1840 census for Paint Township, Ross County, Ohio. (pg. 360)

He was in Ross County, Ohio in 1850. He was age 49, a farmer, and the value of his real estate was $900. Elizabeth was age 48, born in New Jersey. Mary Jane was 24, William, 22, Joseph, 20, Sarah E., 18, Ann E., 16, Emily 14, Jacob, 12 and George, 9.

In 1860, he was age 56, born in Virginia, Mary Jane was age 28, Elizabeth, 24, Emily D., age 20, Jacob, 21 and George, 16. His wife was gone. Edward is not listed in the 1870 census for Ohio.

8. Jacob Cummins³ Brake (Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)⁴⁸ was born between 1802 – 1804 in probably Harrison County, (West) Virginia^49,50, and died between May – September 1841 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia^51,52. He married Mary E. Sigley⁵² 10 April 1823 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia^53,54. She was born about 1801 in Maryland or Pennsylvania^55,56.

Jacob was listed in the 1830 Harrison County, (West) Virginia census, with one female, 5-10 (1820-30), 3 males, 0-5 (1825/30).

On 26 June 1840 he purchased a tract of land (160 acres) from his father and mother on the Buckhannon River in Lewis/Upshur County. This same tract of land, owned by David J. Brake was decreed to be sold on 27 September 1843, to, L. L. Loudin (Haselton vs. Brake), the transaction made 13 June 1847. (Lewis County, Deed Book N/94). In 1841, Jacob C. and Mary Brake deeded 45 acres to Isaac Dix. In 1845, Mary Brake deeded tract on Buckhannon River to Jonas Martin. Jacob’s name not on the record places his death prior to 1845. (Residence: 1840, Lewis County, (W)V,^61,62, Deed: 1841, Lewis County, (W)V^57,58, Deed M/258: 1845)^59,6

Mary may have been the daughter of George Sigley whose will was probated in 1823 probably Lewis County, West Virginia. (H. Piper) Although she probably never moved, Mary was listed as living in Barbour County, (West) Virginia, that area which was once Lewis and later Upshur County, West Virginia.

By 1850 Mary had moved to Meigs County, Ohio, where she and her children are listed in the census. She was age 49, born in Maryland, Silas was age 20, William was age 17, Rabecca was age 14, Emma, age 12, and Percy, age 10, all born in Virginia.

In 1860, Mary is still head of the household, working as a weaver. She was age 62, born in Pennsylvania. David was a carpenter, age 28, born in Virginia, Silas was a cooper, age 30, born in Ohio, William was a school teacher, age 24, born in Ohio, Emma was age 22, keeping house and Perry, age 20, at home, was living in the house next door. Burial: April 1842, Gearnard Cemetery, Reiffburg, Wells County, Indiana^67,68. He married Emeline Abel⁶⁴ 25 July 1835 in Miami County, Ohio^65,66, daughter of Henry Abel and Sara Franklin. She was born 23 March 1817 in Botetourt County, Virginia⁶⁶, and died 10 August 1860 in Indiana⁶⁶.

Thomas moved to Miami County, Ohio in 1833, married two years later, then moved to Jay County, Madison Township near the village of Salamonia, Indiana 20 September 1838. “The country was new and the neighbors scarce, most of them many miles away. They endured all the hardships and privations of pioneer life.” He sued Tower in 1824. He accepted a deed for his father in 1826. He was on the tax list in Harrison County, (West) Virginia in 1826.

After Thomas’ death, on 18 July 1843 Jay County, Indiana, Emeline Brake married John Beard and in 1850, she was age 34, living with her new family, next door to her parents in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. Living with her was her 12 year old son, Jackson Brake, age 12, born in Ohio. Living with her parents was her 8 year old son, George W. Brake.

Burial: about July 1841, Harrison County, (West) Virginia⁷⁴. He married Martha Carpenter⁷² 22 April 1837 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia^73,74. They were married by James G. Sampson. She was born about October 1817 in Virginia⁷⁴, and died 23 May 1895 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia⁷⁴. Burial: after 23 May 1895, Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Harrison County, (West) Virginia⁷⁴

His son, David C. J. Brake, was bound out in July 1841 to Samuel Carpenter, an indication that Abraham had died prior to that date.

He may be buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery with other family members or he may be buried in Historical Jackson Cemetery in Clarksburg, where his father is buried.

Martha is buried next to the infant son of David C. J. and Elizabeth Brake. She was living with David in 1870. She died at age 77 years and 7 months. Her birthdate date is calculated from the death age and the 1870 census.

      13. Madison⁴ Brake (George Washington³, Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)⁷⁴ was born between 1810 – 1815 in probably Greene County, Ohio⁷⁴, and died before 1850⁷⁴. He married Deborah Simpson⁷⁴ 15 September 1839 in Carroll County, Indiana⁷⁴. She was born 1821 in Pennsylvania⁷⁴.

Georgia Brake Todd said that her grandfather was the eldest son, but I believe that Madison may have been the oldest. She gives Abram’s birthdate as 1818, but there was a male child, 15-20 in the 1830, who would have been born 1810-1815. George and Jane were married in 1813, so it would make sense that they would have children right away. There was also a female born within the 1810-1815 time frame.

There was a Bruce M. Brake listed as a heir to George Brake in the partition petition filed by Abraham Brake in October 1864. I find a Bruce M. Brake, age 9, born in Ohio (1841), living in Carroll County, Indiana on 30 July 1850, with William Simpson, age 66, born in Pennsylvania. William is probably his grandfather. Also in the household was Deborah Brake, age 29, born in Pennsylvania, and William S. Brake, age 2, born in Wisconsin. Living with them was John D. Simpson, age 23, born in Pennsylvania.

In Carroll County, Indiana on 15 September 1839, Madison Brake married Deborah Simpson. In the 1840 census for Bath Township, Greene County, Ohio, Madison Brake is listed, age 20-30, born 1810-1820, his wife the same. Bruce Brake was born 1841. Madison died before 1850, maybe in Wisconsin and Bruce was listed as heir in his grandfather estate. William S. Brake, age 2, in 1850 was born in Wisconsin. He is either not a child of Madison, or was not living in 1864, when George died. There are seven years age difference between Bruce and William.

In 1860 Noble Township, Wabash County, Indiana, Deborah Brake is age 37, head of the household, born in Pennsylvania. Bruce M. Brake is age 19, clerk, born in Ohio. William S. Brake is not listed.

Burial: after 28 January 1894, probably Dayton, Greene County, Ohio⁷⁴. He married Margaret Eliza Guthridge⁷⁴ 17 October 1843 in Ohio⁷⁴. She was born 1824 in Ohio⁷⁴, and died 22 March 1901⁷⁴. Burial: after 22 March 1901⁷⁴.

In 1850, Abraham Break was living in Bath, Greene County, Ohio. His wife, Margaret was age 24, Laura was age 5 and Mary B. was age 3. This census is apparently hard to read, as there was no age listed for Abraham or birthplaces for all occupants.

In 1870, Abraham was age 53, is living in Osborn, Greene County, Ohio. His real estate was valued at $40,000 and his personal property at $800. Margaret E. was age 44, and son, John was age 9, attended school. Living there also was his son-in-law, Samuel R. Miller, age 32, salesman, Mary Belle Miller, 21, George M. age 2, and a 12 year old nurse, all born in Ohio.

God’s Infinite Variety – An American, by Georgia Brake Todd:

“My grandfather, Abram Brake, was six feet two inches tall, his eyes were deep blue, and his hair, when I remember him was pure white. He was the old-time aristocrat, distinguished looking, dignified and courteous, but he had a reserve, an aloofness about him which those who did not know him well often took for haughtiness. For several years before his death in 1894, he suffered with heart disease and was compelled to live a very quiet inactive life.

From the time of his youth he was interested in farming and the growing of tobacco and grain. During the Civil War he supplied the army with grain, and at one time lost a hundred and fifty thousand dollars in wheat. This was his first great loss, and after this he decided to divide his estate, giving my grandmother one-half of all he owned. She had a wonderful flair for business and at the time of her death in 1901, her estate was worth many thousands of dollars more than grandfather’s.

Like all Brakes, grandfather loved horses, and he gave each member of his family their own horse. After breakfast old Nell, his sorrel mare, was hitched to a light buggy, and he drove around the country attending to his affairs. I remember as a child, sitting beside him driving the dashboard for an imaginary horse, using the hitching strap for the reins. In the fall we often had a family picnic on his farm near Osborn, Ohio. This farm he loved; it was the place where he was born and raised. The old house was a two-storied Dutch Colonial, red brick house, with a great hall running through the center, the house my great-grandfather, George Brake, built when he came to Ohio from Virginia. In 1827 he sold a corner of this farm, for three thousand dollars, to the Atlantic and great Northern Railroad, which was the first railroad in this part of Ohio. The patent for this land and the records of its sale are now in the Recorder’s Office in Xenia, Ohio.

This farm was a thing of beauty, with its great cultivated fields of grain, tobacco, and pasture land stretching out over what had been, at one time a great flat prairie. Now it is a thing of the past, for today it is the site of the Wright Flying Field, on the outskirts of Dayton, Ohio.

When my father, James Austin Todd, and mother were married, in 1864, grandfather Brake built and gave them a house on the corner of East High Street and Lincoln Avenue, in Springfield, Ohio. This is where we spent our childhood and lived until after my father’s death. The house was red brick, wonderfully built with thick walls and high ceilings. It was surrounded by an iron fence, and had a row of maple trees along the side, and in the days of carriages it had a stepping-stone and two hitching posts in front. The house was typical of the period, with its marble mantle-pieces, piers-mirrors, long lace curtains with heavy silk over-curtains and lambrequins, crystal chandeliers and heavy carpets. Every year in the spring and fall, Cinderella, our old darkly servant had the house cleaned from the attic to the basement, every piece of furniture was polished, every curtain and carpet taken out and cleaned, and we children loved the excitement and confusion, but my father stayed away from the house as much as possible, and poor Cinderella went into a complete decline as soon as it was finished.

In this house we had gay and wonderful times. This was before the day of night clubs and cabarets, and entertaining was all done in your own home. When my mother gave a large party Sady Banks, a colored caterer came with her great coffee-pot and a corps of darkey waiters, but Cinderella, our old “Mammy, was monarch of all she surveyed” in her kitchen, and supervised the whole affair. Not only the dining room was used, but small tables were placed in the library and hall, and a formal dinner was a grand affair. I remember peeking through the banisters in my “nightie” at two of the guests, seated under the stairs. One of them was Mr. Oliver Kelly, an old gentleman I loved. He motioned for me to come down and have his ice cream, and in a fit of madness I rushed and put on my “Sunday best” coat, and with curls awry, I was in the midst of a delicious vanilla ear of corn with pistache husks, when to my horror I heard the voice of Cinderella say: “Young lady, you skip yourself to bed this minute.” As a punishment, I was not allowed to have any of the cakes I had had my eyes on before the party.

At Christmas the carpet in the parlor was covered with a white canvas cloth, and we had a large Christmas tree, which we trimmed ourselves. It was arrayed with strings of cranberries and popcorn, and was lighted with little wax candles, and there were cornicopias filled with candy, and gifts for all of the family and our friends, and until after New Year’s, parties were given every day, and there was the gayety and charm of real hospitality which one cannot forget. On 22 Jun 1880, George Brake, age 29, was a farmer in Bath Township, Greene County, Ohio. His wife, Martha M. was age 27, born in Ohio, as were her parents. Living with them was his father-in-law, Samuel E. Stafford, age 71, retired farmer.

There is a Greene County, marriage for a Mary Elizabeth Brake to a Mark D. Morse on 9 October 1839, bond date, 30 September 1839. I believe her to be the daughter of George and Jane Brake. On 30 July 1850 Mark D. Morse, age 33, a trader, born in New York, was living in the 8th Ward of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, with wife Mary, age 20, and daughter, Didema, age 8, born 1842, both in Ohio. When George Brake died in 1864, Dedama Lisk was one of the heirs of his estate. I believe that Mary died prior to the death of her father, and maybe before 1860, and that her daughter, Didema Morse, became the wife of Abram Lisk. In the 1860 census for Osborn, Greene County, Ohio, Abram Lisk is a tinker, age 34, born in New York and his wife is Didenna, age 19, born in Ohio.

I believe William to be one of the sons of George and Jane Brake. On 13 July 1850, he was living in 8th Ward of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was age 28, born in Ohio and was working as a clerk and had a property value of $1000. His wife, Hannah E. was age 27, born in New Jersey, and daughter, Adebe was age 4. Aldeba Brake was listed as one of the heirs of George Brake, indicating that her father had died prior to George’s death in 1864. (Census: 13 July 1850, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio⁷⁸).

In 1870 Hannah Brake, age 48, born in New Jersey, was a dressmaker, living in Bath Township, Greene County, Ohio. She was living with Thomas A. Dunn, age 26 and wife, Eldeba B., age 24, born in Ohio. Thomas was a farm laborer with a real estate value of $300 and personal property value of $4200. He was born in Ohio. Hannah was still living with the Dunns in 1880, this census listed as mother-in-law. She was age 56, a widow, born in New Jersey, as were her parents. Thomas was age 34, retired farmer, born in Ohio, his father in Pennsylvania and his mother in New Jersey. Aldeba was age 32, milliner, born in Ohio, as were her parents. Burial: after 08 January 1905, West Cemetery, Oxford, Benton County, Indiana⁸⁰. She married Isaac Runner⁷⁸ 25 January 1855 in Benton County, Indiana^79,80. He was born 24 October 1822 in Berkeley County, (West) Virginia⁸⁰, and died 1905 in Benton County, Indiana⁸⁰. Burial: 1905, West Cemetery, Oxford, Benton County, Indiana⁸⁰.

When his parents died Isaac was left in care of his grandfather & uncle. In 1838 he came on foot from Virginia, with his possessions, to Lafayette, Indiana and in 1843 he entered 160 acres in Oak Grove Twp., Benton County, Indiana. By hard work he accumulated 1200 acres of land, some of which is still in the family today. The old home in Oxford was purchased in 1887 and has passed down the family line since. In 1966, Mrs Edgar Galspie, whose husband was of the fourth generation resided in the home at 300 W. Smith Street.

In 1860, on 7th of June he was in Oak Grove, Benton County, Indiana. He was age 39, born in Virginia, a farmer, with real estate property value of $12,000 and personal property value of $2570. The tombstone reading for William of 10 March differs from that of the death record reading of 30 of March, and neither of them agree with the tombstone birthdate, calculated the 10th of March is closer. William died of heart disease in Paint Township, at age 80y2m8d.

There is a Homer Brake, 1871-1928 buried in the same cemetery as William and Emily, could this be a misprint or error in readings and be the tombstone of Elmer?

D. J. Brake is listed in the 1909 Tax Accessor’s Book for Glenwood, Schuyler County, Missouri. He was not living when the 1910 census was taken.

In 1910 Mary Brake is living in Glenwood, Schuyler County, Missouri, a widow, age 71, born in Ohio, her parents in Virginia. She stated she had two children, one living. Living with her was her daughter, Clara, age 35, born in Ohio, her father in Virginia and her mother in Ohio.

There were no Brake’s in the census index for Schuyler County, in 1920. Mary died that year, and her tombstone gives her birthdate as 1836.

Burial: after 1880, School Lot Cemetery, Meigs County, Ohio^103,104. He married Sarah Chaney¹⁰⁰ 30 April 1865 in Meigs County, Ohio^101,102. She was born 1834 in Ohio¹⁰².

Silas B. Brake, age 33, served in the Civil War in Co. E, 75 Ohio Infantry from 30 November 1861- 15 January 1865. He mustered out at Jacksonville, Florida. He applied for a pension on 24 March 1886 and his widow, Sarah, applied on 20 February 1891 in Ohio. The 75th Ohio fought in many well known battles, including 2nd Shiloh, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

On 17 June 1870, Silas Brake was living in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio, Lee Post office. He was age 40, a farmer, with real estate valued at $1800 and personal property valued at $150.

His wife, Sarah, was age 39 and daughter, Emma M. was age 3. Living there also were a Cling family: Letha, 20, Matilda, 19, Louisa, 17, Levi J. , 13, and Mary E., age 9. All occupants were born in Ohio.

In 1880, Silas is still in Meigs County, age 48, born in West Virginia. Sarah is age 48, Emma is age 13.

William H. Brake, age 29, served in Co. A. 122 Ohio Infantry from 19 May 1864 to 26 June 1865. He applied for a pension on 14 March 1889 in Ohio. His widow, Clarinda applied on 20 June 1913 in Ohio.

On 27 July 1870, William is living in Brown, Vinton County, Ohio. He was age 35, born in Virginia. Clarind (sic) was age 35, Francis, age 7 and Rufus C., age 2, all born in Ohio.

In 1880 William and Clarinda are living in Zaleski, Vinton County, Ohio. They are both 44, William born in Virginia, Clarinda in Ohio. Son, Frank M. was age 16, born in Ohio, and son Rufis C., was age 12, born in Ohio.

In 1900 William and Clarinda were living in Chillocothe, Ross County, Ohio, on Seventh Street. William was age 65, married 40 years, born in West Virginia, his father in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. Clarinda was born in January 1839 had 3 children, all living. She was born in Ohio as were her parents.

A few doors away was Charles Brake, born March 1868, age 32, married 1 year, born in Ohio as were his parents. His wife Opal was age 22, born February 1875, in Ohio, as were her parents. No children. (Could this be Rufus C. Brake who was born the same year?)

In 1910, William Brake is living in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, age 74, born in West Virginia, with wife, Clarine, age 75, born in Ohio.

Clarinda Martin, age 27, was living with Henry and Pricilla Graham in 1860, Lee, Athens County, Ohio. She had a son, Henry E. Martin, age 6. In 1870, she is married to William and living in Brown, Vinton County, Ohio, with two children: Francis 7 and Rufus C. 2. Henry Martin, age 17, was living in Lee, Athens County, with Elias and Diantha Graham. Living there also was David Martin, age 72, farmer born in Virginia, possibly his grandfather. There was a Matthew Martin living next door.

His wife, Emma was born in April 1868, had been married for 9 years and had no children. His death certificate, filed by his wife, gives his parents as William Brake, born in Virginia and Clarinda Graham. Clarinda born in Albany, Ohio. Francis was a painter.

In 1910, Francis M. Brake is age 47, living in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, with wife, Emma J. age 43.

37. Rebecca⁴ Brake (Jacob Cummins³, Elizabeth² Jackson, John¹)¹¹⁰ was born 1838 in (West) Virginia¹¹⁰. Rebecca may have died about 1893 after the birth of Lilly. There is no tombstone reading for her in the Culloden Cemetery where other family members are buried. She married (1) John C. Jones¹¹⁰ 23 September 1854 in Meigs County, Ohio¹¹⁰. He died 30 June 1864¹¹⁰. He died during the Civil War. The names of the children and marriage dates were in John’s pension records. Her name was spelled Blake. (Additional information on this family came from Mary Jo Nay, March 2006, descendant of Rebecca). She married (2) Lindley Rossiter White¹¹⁰ 26 March 1869 in Meigs County, Ohio^111,112, son of William White and Mary Rossiter. He was born 1818 in Guernsey County, Ohio¹¹², and died 1893 in Culloden, West Virginia¹¹³.

Rebecca was married John C. Jones, prior to her marriage to Lindley R. White. Rebecca is not living with a Brake family in Meigs County, in 1860. On June 21, 1870, she is listed in Columbia, Meigs County, Ohio, as the wife of Lindly (sic) R. White. (This marriage is proven by the birth record of Julian in a Meigs County, online database, with her maiden name) He is age 52, farmer, with real estate valued at $1200 and personal property at $200, born in Ohio. Rebecca is age 33, born in Virginia. There are three male White children listed, Lindly, 17, Samuel, 15 and Biran H., 10. The first two were listed in the 1860 household of Lindley and Anna White.

Also listed in 1870, is Diadema Jones, age 15, at home, Emmit Jones, age 11, at school, and Mary Jones, age 8, all born in Ohio.

On 4 of June 1880, they are still in Meigs County. Linley R. is age 62, born in Ohio, his parents in Pennsylvania. Rebecca is age 43, born in West Virginia as were her parents. Julian C. is age 10, as is Anna F. Julian’s age here is a conflict with his online birth record which says he was born 17 January 1872. He is listed first in this census. Son, Harry B., age 8 and Rosa Belle, age 6. Didema Jones is still living with them, this time listed as ‘stepdaughter’. She was age 24, born in Ohio, her father in Ohio and her mother in West Virginia. Listed as boarders under the Jones name were Marian, age 8, Martha, age 3 and Flora Mae, 11 months, born in June, all in Ohio. These are probably Diadema’s children.

In 1881 Lindley sold out their Meigs County, property and moved to Cabaell County, West Virginia near Culloden, where both died in the 1890’s. (Mary Jo Nay)

Emma’s was Barach Chase’s second wife. He had several children from a first marriage, some of which are listed with him on 20 June 1870. Barach is age 58, a farmer, with a real estate value of $1500 and a personal property value of $500. He was born in New York. Emma was age 29, born in Virginia. Their daughter, Charity was age 1 and Latetier ? ( name spelled something like “Rotishia” in 1880) was one month, born in April 1870.

In 1880 they are still living in Columbia, Meigs County, Ohio. Barach is age 68, farmer, born in New York as were his parents. Emma was age 41, born in West Virginia, her parents in Virginia. Charity is 11, Rotishia is age 11 and son, Marian, is age 8, all born in Ohio.

On 21/22 June 1900, Barrach, born July 1812, age 87, married 35 years and Emma, born October 1838 was age 61, were living with Marion Chase, age 27.

In the 1910 Ohio Miracode, Emma, age 72, is still living with her son, Marion, age 36.

His tombstone reads: Barrick Chase 1811-1901. His parents were Lewis and Charity Way Chase. His first wife was Elizabeth “Betsy” Bailey.

In 1880, Perry Brake was age 37, living in Scipio, Meigs County, Ohio, His wife, Nancy was age 32, born in Maine and his daughter, Nancy M. was age 7, born in Ohio.

On 1 June 1900 Perry C. Brake is a day laborer, living in Lee, Athens County, Ohio. He was age 58, married for 29 years and was born in Virginia as were his parents. His wife, Nancy E. was age 52, born December 1847, married 29 years, had one child/living. Daughter, Nancy M. was age 25, born in November 1879, in Ohio. She was single.

In 1910, Perry Brake is living in Albany, Athens County, Ohio, age 68, his wife Nancy is age 60 and his daughter, is listed as Nancy Pironne, age 37.

Burial: after 16 December 1928, Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana¹³⁰. He married (1) Maria Reed¹²⁴ 20 July 1861 in Jay County, Indiana^125,126. She was born 29 July 1837 in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania¹²⁶, and died 26 December 1885 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania^127,128. He married (2) Clara Elnora Scott¹²⁸ 13 April 1887 in Cass County, Indiana^129,130. She was born 27 June 1854 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana¹³⁰, and died 23 December 1923 in Bellevue, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania¹³⁰. She was the daughter of Isaiah Scott and Sara Adeline Brown.

In 1850 and 1860, Jackson Brake, was age 12, living with his mother and her second husband, John Beard, in Jay County, Indiana.

In 1870, he was age 33, a merchant in Jay County, Indiana. He had a real estate value of $3000 and a personal property value of $2500. His wife, Mariah, was born in Pennsylvania.

Abram Jackson Brake was interested in his family history and when an old man, about 1928, traveled to Clarksburg, West Virginia, in an attempt to find his grandfather’s grave. Unable to locate anyone knowing it’s whereabouts, he returned home disappointed and passed away not long afterwards.

Abram Jackson Brake served in the Union army during the Civil War. Civil War Record his rank was Sgt. in Co F Regiment 40th Ohio. He was wounded Chickamauga, Georgia. He applied for a pension on 16 July 1888 in Indiana.

“Abram J. Brake, of the firm of Brake and Beard, general merchants at Salamonia, was born in Miami County, Ohio, December 25, 1837, and September 20, 1838, he came to this County, with this parents who settled on section 5, Madison Township.

The country was new and the neighbors scarce, most of them many miles away. They endured all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. His father, Thomas J. Brake, was born in Lewis County, Virginia, in 1800, and in 1833 removed to Miami County, Ohio, where he was married two years later to Emeline Abel. He died in Wells County, this State, in April, 1840.

The mother was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, in 1817, and when two years old, went with her parents, Henry and Sarah A. Abel to Miami County, Ohio, she being the only child at that time. Her father’s family came to Jay County, after she was married, and settled on section 8, Madison Township. Her father built the first brick house in the township, in 1840.

Mr. Brake was reared in sight of Salamonia village, and believes himself to be the oldest male resident of the village, the oldest female resident being Melinda Jackson. He was reared on a farm and completed his education at the academy below Liberty.

September 25, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, Fortieth Ohio Infantry, for three years. Two years of this time he was with his regiment, and one year was at the brigade headquarters, being a Sergeant. At the request of General Whitaker he commanded the provost guards one year as Duty Sergeant. At the battle of Chickamauga he was wounded in the right hand by a minie ball, compelling him to be off duty two months. He was discharged September 26, 1864, at Atlanta, Georgia, on account of expiration of time of service. He returned home, and October 17, of the same year, he engaged in the mercantile trade.

He has a farm on sections 5 and 8, consisting of 103 acres, well improved, with ordinary buildings. Mr. Brake was married September 20, 1861, to Maria Reed, born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, July 27, 1837. She was reared in Wayne County, Indiana, and died in Salamonia, December 26, 1885.

Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Reed. Her mother was born in Pennsylvania, and her father was of Irish ancestry. April 13, 1887, Mr. Brake was married to Clara E. Scott, born near Kokomo, Indiana, June 27, 1854. She was reared in Clay County, Kansas, and removed to Logansport in 1876, where she was engaged as proprietor of a dress-making shop, remaining there until her marriage. Her mother, Sarah A. Brown Scott, is now living at Logansport.

Mr. Brake was postmaster from January 30, 1865, until April 24, 1886. It was a semi-weekly post office when he first took the office, but through his influence it was changed to a daily mail. His grandfather, Abram Brake, was born in Old Virginia, and died in West Virginia.

His great-grandfather Brake was born in Frankfort, Germany, and came to America before the Revolutionary war. He was a manufacturer of woolen cloths, as were also his ancestors. He died in Eastern Virginia. His grandmother Brake, whose maiden name was Jackson, was an aunt of Stonewall Jackson, the latter living with his uncle Brake several years; he was then taken to school by his uncle, Cummings Jackson.

The Jackson’s are of Scotch-English ancestry. The name Brake should have been translated to be spelled Broeke. The Franks, the grandmother on the maternal side, were of French descent. Mr. Brake is a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Pittsburg Lodge, No. 754, and is also a member of Stephen J. Bailey Post, G. A. R., at Portland.

The store, of which Mr. Brake is part owner, was first established by Peter Coldren, it being the first store in the village. He was succeeded by H. and G. W. Abel, and they were succeeded by Abel & Brake in 1865. The firm Brake and Beard has been prosperous. They started their business with about $1,400, and are now considered one of the most responsible firms in the county.”

In 1860, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, George W. Brake, age 18, was living with his grandparents, Henry and Sarah A. Abel in 1860. Also living there were Melinda (Abel) Jackson, 24, Sarah E. Jackson, 6 and Jerreva Jackson 3 months.

In 1880, Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana, George Brake is age 38, a farmer. His wife Mary, is age 22, born in Ohio. Daughters: Bell, age 15, and Allice, age 13, were born in Illinois. Edna, age 11 was born in Missouri. (I have been unable to locate George and family in 1870.)

In 1900, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, George W. Brake is age 58, born July 1840, married 20 years, living on Washington Street. He was born in Indiana, his father in Virginia and his mother in Ohio. Mary A., his wife, is age 42, born in May 1858, married 20, had no children, born in Ohio, her parents in Germany.

Burial: after 29 June 1905, Salem IOOF Cemetery, Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia¹⁴⁰. He married Elizabeth (Bailey) Jenkins¹⁴⁰ 05 December 1865 in Taylor County, West Virginia¹⁴⁰. They were married by the Rev. George Nestor. She was born 23 March 1836 in Virginia¹⁴⁰, and died 03 March 1920 in probably Harrison County, (West) Virginia¹⁴⁰. Burial: after 03 March 1920, Salem IOOF Cemetery, Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia¹⁴².

In July 1841, at age 2 years, 4 months David C. Brake was bound out to Samuel S. Carpenter, in Harrison County, (West) Virginia.

In 1870 he was age 31, a farmer, with a real estate value of $1000 and personal property value of $400, living in Harrison County, West Virginia.

In 1900, Harrison County, West Virginia, Ten Mile District, David C. Brake is age 61, born in West Virginia, his wife, Elizabeth is age 62. Living with them is their daughter, Myrtle V. Hinds, age 31, born in West Virginia, Minnie L. Hinds, granddaughter, age 4 and Lucy Pepper, niece, age 20, born in West Virginia.

David was a Private in Co. H. 12 Reg. WV Inf. Vol., enlisted at age 25. He is listed in the 1890 West Virginia Veterans census, living at Ten Mile District, Harrison County, West Virginia.

David applied for Invalid Pension on 30 July 1877, from Cherry Camp, Harrison County, West Virginia, where he was a carpenter and partially disabled. He stated he enlisted 24 February 1864 and was honorably discharged on 9 August 1865 at Richmond, Virginia. “On 2nd April 1865, in front      of Petersburg, VA at the charging of a fort, I was in the ditch and the firing of the Rebel Artillery over my head injured the drum of my ears. Am entirely deaf in one ear and the other is very much injured. I claim a pension for deafness.”

Brake, Application for Invalid pension No 240.302 on the 9th day of November 1880… “My residence for the five years immediately proceeding my Enlistment was about two miles from Romines Mills, which was the name of my Post Office in Harrison County, West Virginia. My occupation was that of carpenter. My occupation since I was discharged has been that of farmer continuously to the present time when I was able to work, after my discharge I returned to near Romines Mills where I resided until about the first of March 1867 when I removed to within about one mile from Cherry Camp Post Office in Harrison County, where I have resided continuously to this time.

On the 2nd day of April 1865 I was engaged in a charge made on Fort Gregy near Petersburg, Virginia. Me and my comeraids (sic) charged up the ditch which surround the Fort when was compeled (sic) to take Shelter in it and the repeated firing of the Rebel artillery immediately over my head seemed to burst the drum of my ear and also affected my head to such an extent…able to perform manuel (sic) labor more than about half of my time since. I never have had any medical treatment for my ear or head. I did consult Dr. J. B. Cardier who lived at Salem, Harrison County, his Post office address was New Salem, Harrison County, WVa he is now dead. he advised me not to have any one treat my case from the fact he said that no one could restore my hearing but might make it worse. I also consulted Dr. D. H. Bailey whose Post Office address is New Salem, Harrison County, WestVa whose evidence has already been filed in the case.

I have suffered with Rheumatism continuously since I was discharged from the service at times I am almost totally (sic) disable. Dr. S. H. Bailey has treated me for it the 3 last winters I am alwais (sic) worse with it in the wintertime.” signed David C. J. Brake. (Military service: 24 February 1864, Wheeling, (W)V^141,142)

On 10 July 1905, Elizabeth Brake, age 67, postoffice, Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia, filed for a widow’s pension, stating that ” David C. J. Brake, enlisted on 24 February 1864 at Wheeling, WV, was honorably discharged on 9 August 1865 at Richmond, Virginia and died 29 June, 1905. They were married in Taylor County, WV, by Rev. George Nestor on 5 December 1865. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Bailey and they had one living child: Myrtle V. Hinds, born 27 October 1868. At the time of their marriage, David was listed as a carpenter, age 26.”

Elizabeth maiden name was from the Bailey genealogy in the Clarksburg, West Virginia library and David’s pension records. Elizabeth had a daughter, Lucetta, born about 1861, whose father was probably Mr. Jenkins. She is listed as Lucetta Brake in the 1870 census.

Bruce M. Brake enlisted in the 14 Battery, Indiana Light Artillery, Union army, on 11 March 1862, Wabash County, Indiana. He filed for a pension on 10 September 1898 from Illinois. (#1209770) He claimed injury to left arm and 3 ribs, loss of all teeth and TB. He died at age 71y6m, was born in Ohio on October 8, 1840, the son of Madison and Deobrah Simpson Brake, who was born in Pennsylvania. He had resided in Chicago for 21 years. In the widow pension, filed by Fannie S. Brake ( #740,285), Fannie was living at 7006 Normal Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. She stated they were married on the 4th of April 1882 in Wabash County, Indiana (marriage bond was in the file). They had one child: Madison Smiley Brake, born February 14, 1886.

In 1910 Bruce was living in 32nd Ward Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Madison S. Brake was living in the 15th ward. He was born about 1885 in Missouri. In 1920, Madison was lodging on O’Farrell Street in San Francisco, California. He was age 33, married, born in Missouri, his father in Ohio and his mother in Indiana. His wife was not with him. He was a photography salesman. (Census: 1910, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois)^145,146

She married James Austin Todd¹⁴⁶ 05 October 1864 in Greene County, Ohio^147,148. He was born 19 July 1834 in New London, New Hampshire¹⁴⁸, and died 01 November 1901 in Springfield, Ohio¹⁴⁸.

“James A. TODD, Freight Agent, C., S. & C. R. R., Springfield; is a veteran railroad man and old resident of Springfield; he is a native of New Hampshire; was born July 19, 1934; lived on a farm until of age, and came to Springfield in 1856; he became connected with the railroad first as clerk in the freight office here of the C., S. & C. in 1857; in 1861, he received promotion to local agent at Osborne; in 1865, he relinquished this position to take the agency of the A. & G. W., at Reno, Penn., then the terminus in the oil regions of the Meadville Branch. This was a very important position, and involved great responsibility and no small amount of business capacity. In 1867, Mr. Todd became the successor of J. C. Buxton, as agent of the C., S. & C. at this point, and has since continued to hold this position, having charge of all the freight business at this end of the road; as indicative of the energy and enterprise of his management, when he took charge one horse did the work of moving cars; now two switch engines are kept busy, and the freight bills collected aggregate from $15,000 to $19,000 per month. Mr. Todd is also a member of the firm of Taylor, Hayden & County, who are doing a large business in the coal trade. He married, in 1864, Miss Laura Brake, of Osborne; this union has been blessed with three children, a son and two daughters; the family now reside in a residence which he built at the northwest corner of High street and Lincoln avenue. In 1870, James was age 35, a railroad agent, living in Fourth Ward, City of Springfield on 15th of June. Laura was age 24, James, age 4 and Harrie, age 1. There was one domestic servant, Adelia Henry, age 16 and George Brake, 19, clerk in railroad office. In 1880 James A. Todd was still in Springfield, age 46, born in New Hampshire as were his parents. Laura, age 34, born in Ohio, her father in Virginia and her mother in Ohio. James A. was 14, Harry D. age 9, and daughter, Georgie was 3. There was on servant, Maggie Collins, age 21. In 1930, they are still living in Wyacondah. Wilson A. Brake is age 62, married at age 26, born in Iowa. Rachel E. was age 58, married at age 22, born in Iowa. Son, Orlo W., was living with them, age 23, married at age 22, born in Iowa. His wife, Inez S. was age 19, married at age 18, born in Iowa.

Nancy Von Brecht has Albert E. Brake dying in Oklahoma in 1916, but I find a Albert E. Brake, b. 1892, in Missouri, age 27, living in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma in 1920. The only clincher here is that Albert told census takers that both his parents were born in Missouri, but they were not. Albert’s wife is Madie, age 24, born in MO. Children, all born in Oklahoma, are Denver J. age 7, Juanita, age 6, William Leroy, age 3 years 1 month, Alene, age 1 year 4 months.
