Jackson Brigade Reunion 2024

The next Jackson Brigade Reunion will be held Friday August 16 to Sunday August 18, 2024 in the Clarksburg/Weston/Jackson’s Mill area of West Virginia.  Last update of this web page on October 17, 2023.

A message from the Jackson Brigade President Ed Clark:

Below is an update on the 2024 Jackson Reunion which will be held in north-central WV.  I hope all is well with you and your families. Take care! Ed Clark

Greetings everyone. I am reaching out with an update on the 2024 Jackson Brigade Reunion. The Jackson Brigade Corporation (JBC) Board has had a couple Zoom planning sessions so far. We are excited to report on our progress. The date is firm, Aug 16-18, 2024. We will meet in north-central WV, where John and Elizabeth Cummins-Jackson settled after living in eastern Maryland and eastern VA. They crossed the Appalachian Mountains and built a home near modern day Buckhannon.

The Hacker’s Creek Pioneer Descendants (HCPD) headquarters in Horner, WV will be our “hub” for registration, weekend activities, and presentations. A link to HCPD’s website is provided at the end. Motels are available in Weston and Clarksburg, 5 miles and 25 miles from Horner, respectively. A block of motel rooms will be set up in Weston for attendees. A tentative itinerary is below. Details will be finalized in the coming months.

FRIDAY (Aug 16) – Registration and check-in for attendees will begin late morning at HCPD. They have plenty of space to accommodate us and attendees can explore their extensive family history archives. In the early afternoon, we will head to Jackson’s Mill. Lunch and dinner will be on your own. We will have an evening speaker, author Hunter Lesser. He is a regional historian who has published several books on the Civil War era. His presentation will probably happen at HCPD around 7:00 PM.

SATURDAY (Aug -17) – Many Jackson descendants are interred at the historic Jackson Cemetery in Clarksburg. That will be our first stop Saturday morning. Mid-day we will go to “The Waldomore”, which is part of the Clarksburg Public Library, for a discussion with Clarksburg native and local historian David Houchin. He will talk with us about the Jackson influence in the early development of Clarksburg. A link for the Waldomore library is below. We are working with David to create a self-guided driving tour of Clarksburg sites, those of significance to our members. The size of our group will determine the logistics of the driving tours.

SATURDAY EVENING – We will meet back at HCPD for a catered dinner around 5:00 PM. Afterwards, we will have a presentation by JBC member Cindy Parrill, “Using DNA to solve Jackson Family Mysteries”. That will be followed by a panel discussion to field questions and have a general discussion on genealogy research.

SUNDAY (Aug 18) – We will hold a short memorial service to honor JBC members who have passed since the 2022 Reunion. This will be followed by a JBC business meeting. These two items will happen from approximately 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Attendees can arrive early to check out the HCPD family archives. HCPD volunteers will be on hand. A catered lunch will be served in HCPD’s new outdoor pavilion. Afterwards, we will have group-driving tours to various historical sites, like the Pringle Tree, the Henry Jackson Cemetery, or the Weston Lunatic Asylum. Attendees can join us, or head home after lunch.

OTHER ITEMS – If you know you will or may attend the 2024 Reunion, please let us know. Send an email message to Ed Clark at eddclark05@gmail.com. A general idea of the number of attendees will help with planning and logistics. Will you arrive mid-day Friday? Will you stay for the Sunday afternoon tours? Those numbers will be helpful as well. Please bring family materials, including photos to share with the group. Your family history will help others with their family trees. Sometime in March, we will send out a registration form with the itinerary, hotel rates, and the cost for registration. We will keep the cost to a minimum.

Note – if you have not yet renewed your membership, please do that soon. JBC members will get a lower registration rate for the 2024 Reunion.

Our biannual reunions are an opportunity to share stories, compare notes, and have a fun learning experience. Our membership and Board members have a wealth of knowledge regarding the history of our Jackson descendants. Some of these stories can be found on the JBC website (jacksonbrigade.com). For inquisitive minds, links to various articles and publications are listed below. Also below are recommended books on our ancestors. Two articles are attached as files. The longer one (“The Shaping of the Nation”) was presented by our own Nancy Jackson in 1998 at an event celebrating the 250th anniversary of John and Elizabeth’s emigration to America. It is a great overview of our ancestors. So, please make plans to come to Weston, WV next August. I welcome your feedback and look forward to hearing from you. Stay healthy and stay safe.

Respectfully,
Ed Clark
