Stories of our youth from Nancy Jackson.

Her story is a follow up on her older brother Bill’s story about the serial killer Harry Powers.

Scary stuff!

Google Harry Powers for more information about him. [Everyone should read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Powers — Dan]

The day before Harry Powers was arrested, he was painting the house across from where my family lived. I was yet to be conceived. My sister Betty was an infant. The night of the day he was arrested, my mother had a nightmare about Harry Powers coming after her with an ax, I believe. Mom was screaming, holding Betty. and trying to get out of a two story window. My dad saved her by holding her back by grabbing her arm. Her arm was black and blue afterwards.

I often went to the “Powers” store for candy as a child. I remember the passage hole that Belle Strowther used to pass money to Luella Powers. One time I had my red headed nephew Orval with me. Luella came into the store from the back to see him. She had red hair and wore it piled high. A neighbor told me Luella could be seen walking near their house after dark. I remember many times running past the Powers house at night time and past the pine trees in a neighbor’s yard. Several years ago the Powers house was torn down. For some years it had been rented. I wonder if the renters knew the history of the house.
